What You Can Check When The Bottle Arrives, And What You Cannot

The most useful minute of this purchase happens at the kitchen table with a parcel open, and almost nobody spends it. The panel on the bottle answers questions the sales page left open, and it fails to answer four others.

Before you read the rest
  • The figures arrive with the bottle. 21 CFR 101.36 requires the amount by weight per serving on the printed Supplement Facts panel, so the numbers are in the carton whether or not they were on the website.
  • Eight checks, one minute. Capsule count, serving size, servings per container, the ingredient rows, the other ingredients line, the lot, the date and the seal.
  • Four things a panel cannot settle. Whether the capsule matches the panel, purity, whether it will work for you, and whether the seals mean what they look like.
  • The window starts at purchase. Sixty days, counted from the date of the order rather than from the day the parcel lands, so the check is worth doing on day one.

Why the amounts are in the carton

It is easy to read a sales page that publishes eight names and no figures and conclude that the figures do not exist. They do.

21 CFR 101.36 requires the quantitative amount by weight, per serving, of every dietary ingredient that is not a listed nutrient, and it requires it on the Supplement Facts panel of the package. A proprietary blend may pool the individual figures, and even then the blend has to be identified as one, its names listed in descending order of weight and its total weight declared.

So the panel is a document with numbers on it, and it travels inside the carton. What the MindSave seller decided was not to publish those numbers before the sale. That is a decision about the order of events, and the useful response to it is not indignation but a diary note: open the box and read the back of the bottle on the day it arrives, while the whole of the 60-day window is still in front of you.

The sixty-second check

Eight things, all on the bottle, none of them requiring any equipment. Work down the list with the carton open.

Eight checks, and what each one settles
What to look atWhere it isWhat it settles
The capsule countFront of the labelWhether the bottle holds what was sold. This product prints 30 capsules on the front and sells each bottle as a 30-day supply.
Serving size and servings per containerTop two lines of the panelHow to read every figure beneath it. A panel is written per serving, and a serving is not always one capsule.
The ingredient rowsThe body of the panelThe names and the amounts, or the names and a blend total. This is the answer the sales page did not give.
The other ingredients lineDirectly under the panelThe capsule shell, the flow agents and any allergen statement. It is the line vegetarians and allergy sufferers actually need.
The lot codePrinted or stamped, often near the baseWhich production run this bottle came from, and the reference order support will ask for.
The best-before dateBeside or below the lotWhether a six-bottle order outlives its own shelf life.
The safety sealUnder the cap and around the neckWhether the bottle has been opened. The label’s own caution says not to use it if the seal is damaged.
The name and address of the firmFoot of the labelWho is legally responsible for the product, which is who a complaint eventually reaches.

Eight fields, all of them on the outside of the bottle, all readable before the cap comes off for the first time.

Reading your own panel against the research

Once the amounts are in front of you, they become comparable to something. Not to a rival product, which is a harder exercise, but to the doses published trials actually used.

Every amount below is the amount a published study gave. The MindSave sales page prints no amount for any of the eight names it lists, so none of these figures describes what is in the capsule.

Four of the eight names, and what published trials gave
IngredientWhat studies usedAmount on the sales page
Bacopa Monnieri300 to 450 mg a day of a standardised extract, in adults without dementia or significant cognitive impairment, and every trial in the review ran twelve weeksNot published
Huperzine A200 or 400 micrograms twice a day, in micrograms rather than milligrams, in a trial run in people with a dementia diagnosis rather than in healthy adultsNot published
Niacin (as Niacinamide)An adult RDA of 16 mg NE for men and 14 mg NE for women, with a tolerable upper intake level of 35 mg a day for supplemental niacinNot published
Vitamin B6An adult RDA of 1.3 mg to age 50, then 1.7 mg for men and 1.5 mg for women, with a tolerable upper intake level of 100 mg a day from food and supplements togetherNot published

The middle column belongs to the studies and the reference intakes that produced it. The right-hand column describes the seller’s web page, and the panel in your hand is the document that fills it.

Notice the unit in the second row. Huperzine A is trialled in micrograms, a thousandth of a milligram, while bacopa is trialled in hundreds of milligrams. Two names one line apart on a list can differ by a factor of a thousand in the research behind them, and an ingredient list with no figures on it looks exactly the same either way. That is the whole difference between knowing a formula’s names and knowing its scale, and it is the thing the panel in the carton hands you.

The ingredients page carries the same comparison for all eight names.

Four things no panel can settle

A panel is a declaration, not a measurement, and it is worth knowing where it stops.

  • Whether the capsule matches the panel. Only an assay answers that, and an assay tests the bottles it was run on rather than the one in your hand.
  • Purity. Heavy metals, solvent residues and microbial counts are laboratory results. A lot code is a production reference and a certificate reference is a reference, not a report. The testing page reads the four seals on this artwork one at a time and says what each can and cannot prove.
  • Whether it will do anything for you. The finished product has not been tested in a published clinical trial, and the National Institute on Aging’s position on the whole category is that no vitamin or supplement is currently recommended for preventing Alzheimer’s or other forms of cognitive decline.
  • What the claims on the front mean. Structure and function claims are not pre-approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The manufacturer holds the substantiation and notifies the agency after marketing begins, which is why the disclaimer printed under them says what it says.

If the panel is not what you expected

On this product that is not a hypothetical. Two ingredient lists have been published for this capsule and they do not match, and one of the two contains caffeine. This desk cannot tell which one matches the bottle now shipping, which is precisely why the panel in your carton is worth a minute rather than a glance. The full account is in the piece on the two published lists.

The panel printed on the bottle you receive settles it in one look, and if it is not what you expected, the 60-day guarantee is the recourse: the seller’s own wording takes the bottles back even empty.

The route is short. Ring order support on +1 (302) 200-3480 with the order ID from the confirmation email, put your name, email and order ID on a slip of paper inside the parcel, and post the bottles back with tracking at your own cost. The refund is issued 3 to 5 business days after the return is credited and takes another 5 to 10 days to appear on the card. The refund policy has the address and the detail.

Thirty capsules at one a day is thirty days, which is why a bottle and a month are the same unit on this product and why two bottles very nearly match the guarantee.

The one thing worth writing down

Put the date of the first capsule somewhere you will find it again. Everything else on this purchase is counted from it: the bottle, the supply, the point at which you have taken enough of the product to have an opinion, and the distance between that point and the day the refund window shuts.

The window is counted from the date of purchase rather than from the date of the first capsule, so a parcel that sits in a drawer for a fortnight spends a fortnight of it. Buyers on this desk’s own order records most often describe waiting 4 to 8 weeks before they formed a view, which is a statistic about the people who bought here rather than a property of the capsule. The timeline page sets the two clocks side by side, and the comparison piece turns the same arithmetic into something you can run against any other bottle on the shelf.

What this is and is not. MindSave is a dietary supplement. It is not a medicine and nothing here presents it as a treatment for memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment. The National Institute on Aging recommends no vitamin or supplement for preventing cognitive decline. If your memory or your thinking is changing in a way that worries you or the people around you, that is a reason to book an assessment, and it is not a reason to start a capsule instead.
